Standup paddling, abbreviated as SUP, is exactly what it sounds like – standing on a board while using a paddle for propulsion. There are various ways to standup paddle, from a relaxing cruise through flatwater areas, to the exhilaration of wave riding in the dynamic environment of the surf zone! To accommodate various levels of ability, experience, and style preference, we offer three levels of SUP sessions.
SUP Level 1 – Flatwater
Best suited for those with little to no experience, that are seeking to learn the basics. Think of this level as “Standup Paddle Boarding 101.” Level 1 sessions are conducted in the flatwater areas (waterway and canals) on the back-side of Ocean Isle Beach. We typically meet beneath the OIB bridge near the boat ramp. We can provide gear (board, paddle, leash, pfd) given there is availability from our friends at Scooter's Surf Garage, or you can use your own.
SUP Level 2 – Ocean Novice
Best suited for paddlers seeking to move from flatwater areas into the ocean for a more dynamic paddling experience. You’re ready for level 2 if you're proficient and comfortable in flatwater, meaning you can maintain balance and remain standing through a combination of light wind, small surface chop, moderate current, and boat wake. Level 2 sessions are conducted in the ocean. We’ll initially spend time beyond the breaking waves getting comfortable in open ocean swells and surface bumps. Then, we'll enter the surf zone to learn the basics of wave selection, wave catching, wave riding, and paddling out through the surf. We can provide gear (board, paddle, leash) given there is availability from our friends at Scooter's Surf Garage, or you can use your own. Level 2 sessions are typically held at the Beaufort Street public access on Ocean Isle Beach.
SUP Level 3 – Surf Progression
Best suited for existing SUP surfers seeking to hone their skills and/or step down in board size and volume. You’re ready for level 3 when proficient and comfortable in the open ocean and surf zone. This means you can remain standing (for the most part) while paddling out through small (1-3’) breaking waves, and identify, catch and ride waves, finishing the majority of them while standing. Level 3 sessions can be tailored to your specific desires for progression. Whether it’s riding down the line, gaining confidence and comfort on your back-side stance, completing turns and maneuvers, or simply a desire to try a smaller board, we can likely help! Level 3 participants should have their own board, leash and paddle, as the familiarity of your own gear will offer the best opportunity at continued progress. That said, level 3 participants yearning to try smaller boards are welcome to demo some of ours during the session. We have a Hobie Eva-lution that's 10'6" x 30" x 4.75" (168L), a Naish Nalu that’s 9’6” x 28” x 4.37” (135L), and a Fanatic Stubby that’s 8’7” x 29.25” x 3.5” (120L). See the picture gallery above for a visual of all three boards. Level 3 sessions are typically held at the Beaufort Street public access on Ocean Isle Beach. All levels of SUP sessions are 90 minutes. This includes about 15 minutes of preliminary instruction, before moving to the water for over an hour of water-based instruction and fun! The last 5-10 minutes are used for pictures and a brief recap.
We can accommodate up to 2 standup paddle participants per session.
1 person = $90
2 people = $75 each
Payment can be made just after the session via cash or Venmo plus a $2 fee.
SUP sessions are generally scheduled during morning hours as this typically allows for calmer conditions and less crowds. If weather conditions are deemed unsafe or the water surface is too rough for an enjoyable experience, we will postpone and try to reschedule.
Please arrive at least 5 minutes before your scheduled time to read and sign our waiver/release of liability prior to beginning. It can be found on the "Contact Us" page if you'd like to read it in advance.
